Netheril

City Exploration:

  • During catastrophe Yriolarthas’s tower could be sealed. Unsealing the tower involves a ritual called the ‘Arcane Octad’.
  • Yriolarthas’ staff could be used in conjuction with the strange obelisk to reverse time.
  • Wizards of Ythrn could undergo a process of removing their brains and placing them in magical jars – this promised eternal life but the quality of this life is debatable.
  • Apprentice Mages would graduate from the House of the Arcane and join one of the eight arcane towers, each dedicated to a different school of magic.
  • A Brochure found in a museum advertised the sale of mimics – arcane beasts used in construction and home defense.
  • A second brochure advertised chimaeric pets. Animals were fused together to create designer pets.
  • The wizards of Ythrn were on a mission to collect relics from a 40,000 year old empire called ‘Ostoria’. Ostaria was said to be the empire of spellcasting giants.
  • The Bazaar of the Bizarre once held wonders from across the world
  • Meditation in the Hall of Weightless Wonder was an invaluable pursuit of the city’s elite.
  • Magen worked in the city as guards, workers and Valets – and were created using powerful spells.
  • A Competetive sport called Chain Lighnting was enjoyed across all of Netheril, but particularily in Ythrn.

The Professor was happy to explain a major contributing factor to the fall of Netheril

In ancient times the God Mystryl governed all magic, and created the Weave that allowed mortals to perform their own magics as the Gods do.

One Netherese mortal coveted this power, and worked to steal it from Mystryl. Mystryl recognized what was happening and sacrificed themselves to stop it, negating and preventing magic on Faerun for centuries. This caused the fall of the Netehrese empire, and additionally caused the city of Ythrn to fall from the sky.

Later, Mystryl was reincarnated as Mystra, who kept a much tighter lid on arcane shenanigans, and is worshipped by practitioners of arcane magic to this day.

Netheril is an ancient empire of mages that ruled most of the world thousands of years ago. They were undone by hubris and now exist only in legends and buried ruins. One such ruin apparently exists somewhere in Icewind Dale.

Our Heroes located a ruin of Netheril – a spire that had fallen from a flying city and pierced the tundra.
