Episode 31 – The Slaad Host

Our Heroes made their way to Revel’s end. They spent their time on GromnGorn’s Galley studying the Codicile of White, learning that it can sunder any ice or crystaline structure by speaking the Rime.

When our heroes arrived, an elevator was lowered to the dock to bring our heroes up to the prison itself. They were guided into the panopticon, a circular chamber lined with overcrowded cells.

Torga was here with more bounties. She attempted to make peace with our heroes, assuring them that her hero hunting days are over.

Marta, the Warden arrived to speak with our heroes. She acknowledged the bounty on Largo’s head but for some reason was unwilling to enforce it.

Our Heroes asked to speak with the sick prisoner, a member of the arcane brotherhood named Vaelish Gant. When Gant arrived he was placed behind a magical wall for questioning. He was pale and sickly. He was hoping for a rescue, begging our heroes to get him out of prison.

Yrso created a zone of truth in the cell before questioning. Vaelish explained that he had attempted to destabalize the ten towns so he could take Duvessa’s place as Leader, and use the towns as a staging operation. His plans had nothing to do with the current expedition.

He also explained that his illness began after a strange dream about a toad. The toad touched his chest before Vaelish woke up.

Vaelish became increasingly erratic during questioning. Mentioning nepotism and Vellyne’s general incompetance while asking for a jailbreak in the same breath. He cursed the nincompoops running the jail for being unable to cure him, when a tadpole burst from his chest and disappeared into the walls.

During this chaos Marta began speaking dwarvish and rtired to the kitchen to drink ale. Our heroes were perplexed but committed to the task at hand and continued hunting the tadpole without her.

The tadpole was chased into the private quarters of the lords’ representatives, where it had consumed councillor Jil Torbo.

From here, the tadpole was pursued into the panopticon, where it had assumed the appearance of a terrified prisoner. The real prisoner was identified by another use of Zone of Truth, and the false prisoner assumed his true form of a fully grown Slaad. The Slaad quickly tried to implant another tadpole in the prisoner next to him, but this effort was thwarted by Largo’s dispel magic.

The Slaad was ultimately dispatched, and an outbreak was prevented.
