The Knights of the Black Sword have been routed from Caer Dineval, their leader Kadroth and many others sent to serve Levistus in hell. A handfull of survivors fled into the wilderness .

The Knights of the Black Sword are a cult based in Icewind Dale. They are composed of members who faced certain death in the wilderness, but were saved when they traded their soul to Levistus in exchange for their survival.
The cult is led by a paunchy tiefling named Kadroth, and executes Levistus’ will in Icewind Dale.
Recently, the cult arrived in Caer Dinneval under false pretenses, pretending to be negotiators from Easthaven who wished to reopen the ferry and resume trade with the Caer.
They were welcomed by Speaker Crannoc, allowed to stay within the Caer, while more and more cult members showed up and eventually overwhelmed the village’s militia in a surprise attack and took over the Caer itself.
They slew the militia, and kept a small number of caer staff to continue upkeep and meals. The rest are imprisoned in the cistern as collateral for the speaker’s continued cooperation.
Kadroth now has designs to become Caer Dineval’s speaker, to solidify the cult’s presence in the Ten Towns, and to lend legitimacy to his occupation of the Caer.
Levistus commanded the cult to enlist our heroes in their fight against the Duegar warlord Xardoroth Sunblight. The cult believes their alliance with our heroes is as good as set in stone, however our heroes have witnessed too much of the cult’s villainy, and their reckoning may soon be at hand.
